Let's start with a scene most women have lived.

You're sitting in the same room as someone else — same temperature, same weather outside, probably the same number of walls between you and the cold. You're wrapped in a blanket or have quietly turned the AC down. They're in a t-shirt, completely unbothered, maybe even a little warm.

"Are you actually cold right now?"

Yes. Actually, yes.

This is one of those experiences so common it's become a joke — the thermostat wars, the office cardigan, the woman who runs cold and the man who doesn't notice. But underneath the joke is something real. Women and men genuinely experience temperature differently, and the reasons aren't random. They're written into body composition, hormones, blood flow, and in some cases, nutrient levels that most women have never thought to connect to how cold they feel.

This isn't about being more sensitive. It's about having different biology. And understanding that biology — why it works this way, what's normal, and what might be worth looking into — is more useful than another layer.

The Furnace Explanation

Here's the simplest way to understand what's happening.

Your muscles generate heat. Not just when you're exercising — all the time, even at rest, just by doing the work of keeping you upright and functional. The more muscle you have, the more heat your body is constantly producing in the background.

Men, on average, have more muscle mass than women. Not because they work harder or move more, but because of how testosterone shapes body composition. And this difference in muscle mass translates directly into a difference in how much heat each body produces just by existing. Research shows women use about 5–10% less energy at rest than men of comparable age and size, even when you account for body weight and activity levels. Less energy being burned means less heat being produced.

So when you're both sitting still in the same room and you're cold and he isn't, it's not in your head. His body is running like a slightly bigger furnace. Yours is producing real warmth but just less of it.

The Body Fat Paradox

Here's where it gets interesting, because the explanation isn't as simple as "less muscle, more cold."

Women generally carry more body fat than men, and fat is actually an excellent insulator. It keeps heat in. So you might expect that more insulation would mean feeling warmer — but that's not quite how it plays out.

What body fat does brilliantly is keep your core — your heart, lungs, and vital organs — warm and protected. In cold environments, this is genuinely useful. Your internal temperature stays stable. Your core is doing fine.

The problem is that your body achieves this by pulling blood flow away from the parts it considers less essential in the moment. Your hands. Your feet. Your skin surface. So you end up with a warm core and freezing extremities, and the freezing extremities are what you actually feel.

A study from researchers who measured exactly this in real conditions found that women's thermoregulatory profile has what they called an "arctic shift" — not because women handle cold poorly, but because their bodies are routing warmth inward rather than outward. The insulation protects the inside at the cost of the surface.

This is why "my core is fine but my hands are always freezing" is such a universal complaint. Your body is doing its job. You're just feeling the side effects of it.

The Hormonal Thermostat Nobody Talks About

This part gets almost no airtime, and it should — because it explains a lot of the variation women notice in themselves from week to week.

Estrogen and progesterone don't just run the reproductive cycle. They both have direct effects on the part of the brain that regulates body temperature. The hypothalamus functions essentially like your body's internal thermostat. And because these hormones fluctuate across the month, so does the thermostat.

During the first half of your cycle, when estrogen is higher, many women naturally run a little warmer and feel more comfortable at cooler temperatures. After ovulation, when progesterone rises, core body temperature nudges up slightly — but this is internal temperature, not warmth you can feel on your skin. In the days before your period, when both hormones drop, a lot of women feel noticeably colder. Hands and feet especially — one more example of how low iron and menstruation-linked shifts can quietly overlap and compound each other. This is real, it's measurable, and almost nobody explains it in those terms.

At perimenopause and menopause, when estrogen levels drop significantly and become less predictable, this internal thermostat becomes less stable. It's the reason hot flushes happen — because the thermostat is misfiring and triggering sudden heat responses at the wrong time. But it's also part of why some women feel persistently cold at other times. The system that once had a reliable rhythm is recalibrating.

The point is: your experience of temperature across the month is not random. It's hormonal. And knowing that actually makes it easier to make sense of why Tuesday last week felt completely different from today.

Where the Blood Goes

When your body senses that it's getting cold, it responds by narrowing the blood vessels near your skin and pulling blood toward the centre of your body. This keeps the heat where it's most needed. Less blood near the surface means less heat escaping.

Women tend to experience this more strongly than men. Research consistently shows that in cool environments, women have lower skin temperatures than men — not because they're colder internally, but because their bodies redirect blood away from the surface more aggressively. The result is cold hands, cold feet, and skin that feels cool to the touch even when internally you're perfectly warm.

Estrogen also plays a role here. It affects how blood vessels respond to cold — making the vessels near the skin more reactive in women, more likely to constrict quickly. This is protective for the core, but it's also why you're the person in the group most likely to be asking if the heating can be turned up.

None of this is dysfunction. It's the body prioritising where warmth is most needed. But it does make the lived experience of temperature genuinely different from what most men are walking around with.

When It's More Than Just How You're Built

Everything above is normal. If you've always run a little cold, needed one more layer than the people around you, had perpetually cold hands even in summer — this is likely just your physiology. You're not broken.

But there's a version of always-feeling-cold that's something different. Not just a baseline, but a change. A worsening. A cold that doesn't shift even when you're warm enough by any objective measure. And for women, when that's the story, iron is one of the first things worth thinking about — cold intolerance is one of the more overlooked iron deficiency symptoms, and it rarely gets mentioned in the same breath as fatigue or brittle nails.

Iron affects how warm you feel in two ways, and neither of them are particularly well known.

The first is oxygen. Iron is what allows your red blood cells to carry oxygen around your body. When iron is low, less oxygen reaches your muscles and tissues — and your body needs that oxygen to generate heat and respond to the cold. Without enough of it, the normal "I'm cold, let me warm up" response is weakened. Your body tries to compensate and can't quite get there.

The second is your thyroid. The thyroid gland is the master regulator of metabolism — how fast your body is converting food into energy and, by extension, heat. Iron is involved in the production of thyroid hormones. When iron stores drop, thyroid function can become sluggish. And a sluggish thyroid means a slower metabolism, less heat generated, and a body that struggles to stay warm.

What makes this easy to miss is that standard blood tests look at haemoglobin — the measure of whether you have clinical anaemia — and haemoglobin can be perfectly normal while iron stores are quietly running low. What falls first is ferritin, which is how much iron your body has in reserve. A woman can have ferritin in the low-normal range and be experiencing real functional effects — cold sensitivity, fatigue, slower recovery, difficulty concentrating — without a single flag on a standard blood panel.

This is why "I got my blood test done and everything was fine" is sometimes not the complete answer. If ferritin wasn't specifically checked, the most relevant number may not have been looked at.

How to Tell the Difference

Most women who run cold don't need to investigate anything. But here's a rough guide to when it's worth looking closer:

It's probably just your physiology if: You've always been this way, it follows a pattern across your cycle, it's worse in genuinely cold environments and better in warm ones, and you otherwise have good energy and feel like yourself.

It might be worth looking into if: The cold sensitivity has got noticeably worse over the past few months. Your hands and feet are uncomfortably cold even in warm weather or at rest. It comes alongside tiredness that doesn't resolve with sleep, slower recovery from workouts or illness, or a general flatness that's hard to explain. Or you're eating a mostly plant-based diet and haven't had your iron checked recently — plant-based eating tends to limit iron absorption foods naturally provide, which is worth factoring in alongside any blood work.

If any of those ring true, ask for serum ferritin specifically — not just a general blood count. The threshold that matters for functional symptoms like cold sensitivity and fatigue is around 30 ng/mL. Clinical anemia is diagnosed much lower than that, which means a result that says "normal" by standard reference ranges might still be low enough to be affecting how you feel. If levels do come back low, working iron rich foods back into daily meals, alongside a well-chosen iron supplement for women, is usually the first step — and for women who find conventional iron pills for women hard on the stomach, a gentler liposomal iron formulation is worth asking your doctor about as an iron supplement without constipation.

The Bigger Picture

The experience of feeling cold is one of those things women are so used to being dismissed about that it doesn't even occur to most of us to ask why. We just accept it as a quirk, grab another layer, and move on.

But it's not random. It reflects real differences in how female bodies produce heat, distribute it, and regulate it across the month. It reflects the influence of hormones on a system that was mostly studied in men until fairly recently. And sometimes, it reflects a nutritional gap that's genuinely fixable once you know to look for it.

You don't have to make peace with always being cold. You just have to understand what's behind it — and know when the answer is "that's just how your body works" versus "your body is asking for something it's not getting."

Both are worth knowing. And neither of them is "are you really cold right now?"
