What Women Around the World Eat for Breakfast and What It Says About Their Health
Breakfast is one of those meals that every culture has an opinion about. Eat it, don't eat it, make it big, keep it light. The debates are endless. But step back and look at what women around the world are actually putting on their plates in the morning and a few things become pretty clear.
Some cultures treat breakfast like a small meal that quietly does a lot of work. Others have turned it into a ritual. And in India, for a significant number of women, breakfast is a cup of chai and a few biscuits on the way out the door — if it happens at all.
This isn't a piece about judgment. Every breakfast habit exists for a reason like time, access, culture, habit. But the differences are worth looking at, because what you eat (or don't eat) in the first hour of your day shapes how you feel, how your body absorbs nutrients, and over time, what your nutritional health looks like.
Japan: Small Plate, Serious Nutrition
A traditional Japanese breakfast looks nothing like what most of us are used to. It's warm, savoury, and built around foods that happen to support the gut before anything else: a bowl of miso soup, steamed rice, grilled fish or a piece of salmon, a small dish of pickled vegetables, and sometimes natto, a fermented soybeans that are deeply unpopular with most non-Japanese people but deeply useful for gut health.
The miso soup alone is doing more than it looks like. Research has found that miso, as a fermented food, is naturally probiotic — feeding the good bacteria in the gut microbiome. A 2021 study found that women with type 2 diabetes who drank miso soup daily had better blood sugar control compared to women who didn't. That's a single cup of soup at breakfast making a measurable difference by lunch.
The Japanese-style diet more broadly has been associated with reduced total mortality and longer survival, with top dietary components being soy and soy-derived products, seafood, and vegetables, followed by rice and miso soup. The breakfast is basically a microcosm of that pattern.
What Japanese breakfast gets right nutritionally is the combination: fermented foods for gut health and probiotic benefit, protein from fish for satiety and amino acids, complex carbohydrates from rice for steady energy, and vegetables from the pickled sides adding fibre and micronutrients. None of it is dramatic. None of it is a "superfood" in the modern marketing sense. It's just a thoughtfully balanced meal that the culture has refined over centuries.
The practical reality for most women outside Japan is that this breakfast takes preparation — dashi broth doesn't make itself in five minutes. But the principle it represents is worth noting: warm, protein-rich, gut-friendly, and nutrient-dense before 8am.
Turkey: The Breakfast That's Actually a Spread
Turkish breakfast is a different kind of entirely. Where the Japanese breakfast is quiet and precise, the Turkish one is abundant. It is not one dish — it is a table.
A traditional Turkish breakfast includes an assortment of cheeses, olives, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, eggs prepared in various ways, whole-grain bread, and often honey or fruit preserves. The olives and olive oil deliver healthy fats beneficial for heart health, while the protein-rich eggs and cheese aid in muscle repair and provide sustained energy.
What stands out nutritionally is the sheer variety. A dietitian speaking to SBS described it this way: "A Turkish breakfast that's filled with cheese, wholegrain breads, eggs and vegetables is nutrient-dense. From a gut health perspective, we know it's important to eat around 30 different plant-based foods a day." She described it as superior to a traditional Western fried breakfast in terms of nutrient diversity.
That diversity is the actual secret. In a single breakfast, a Turkish woman is getting protein (eggs, cheese), healthy fat (olives, olive oil), fibre and complex carbohydrates (whole-grain bread), fresh vitamins from raw vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers), and calcium from dairy. It's essentially a Mediterranean diet compressed into a morning meal.
It also does something that's harder to quantify but genuinely important: it takes time. A proper Turkish breakfast isn't something you eat in the car. It's a meal you sit down for, often with other people. There is research suggesting that this matters — eating more slowly, in a social context, affects how much food is consumed, how quickly it's digested, and how satisfied people feel afterward. The cultural practice around breakfast in Turkey supports the nutritional practice.
India: The Chai-and-Biscuits Reality
Now for the one closest to home.
Indian food is, by any measure, one of the most nutritionally sophisticated cuisines in the world. Fermented idli-dosa batters, iron-rich lentil dishes, turmeric, cumin, coriander, the entire ayurvedic tradition of cooking with intention — the cuisine has an extraordinary amount of built-in nutritional wisdom.
And then there's what a lot of Indian women actually eat for breakfast.
Chai. Maybe biscuits. Sometimes nothing at all.
This isn't a critique — it's a reality shaped by how much a typical Indian woman's morning involves doing for everyone else before she does anything for herself. Getting children ready, managing households, leaving early for work. Breakfast often doesn't make the cut, or it gets reduced to whatever is fastest and easiest.
The problem is that the gap this creates is significant, and it lands hardest in the context of iron.
Nearly 53% of women and 58% of children under five in India are affected by anaemia, according to national health surveys — one of the clearest iron deficiency symptoms at a population level, even before it shows up as fatigue or breathlessness in any one woman. One contributing factor is the timing of chai consumption — many Indian women consume chai during or immediately after meals, which increases the inhibitory effect of tannins on iron absorption at precisely the time when dietary iron intake occurs, undoing the benefit of even genuinely iron rich foods on the plate.
Research on dietary iron requirements for Indian women found that the median risk of dietary iron deficiency among women of reproductive age was around 65%, with considerable variation between states. The primary reason is a diet where mean iron density is roughly 25% lower than recommended adequate intake — a gap that's especially pronounced for women iron needs during the reproductive years, when low iron and menstruation losses compound the shortfall month after month.
When breakfast is chai and biscuits, the problems compound. The tannins in tea reduce iron absorption from any food consumed around the same time. Biscuits add refined carbohydrates and very little of nutritional substance. And skipping breakfast altogether — which many Indian women do — means the first proper meal of the day doesn't arrive until noon or later, leaving a long gap with no nutrient intake after overnight fasting.
Research on breakfast skipping in women found that female breakfast skippers display disrupted cortisol rhythms and elevated blood pressure. Skipping breakfast also adversely affects menstrual regularity, as reported in studies of college students in Japan and Palestine.
A systematic review evaluating 66 studies from 2010 to 2025 found that breakfast omission was associated with obesity and weight gain, altered hormonal responses influencing hunger and energy balance, and was linked to higher rates of psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety, possibly due to cortisol dysregulation and imbalances in serotonin and dopamine pathways.
None of this means every Indian woman who skips breakfast is heading toward a health crisis. But for women already operating with low iron stores, which is a majority, starting the day without a proper meal, or with one that actively suppresses iron absorption, consistently makes a difficult situation harder.
What the Comparison Actually Shows
Look at these three breakfasts side by side and a few principles emerge:
Protein in the morning matters. Japan has fish. Turkey has eggs and cheese. Both provide protein early in the day, which supports satiety, reduces the blood sugar volatility that comes from carbohydrate-only meals, and supplies amino acids that the body uses for tissue repair and immune function. A chai-and-biscuit breakfast has almost none. Even traditional Indian breakfasts — poha, upma, idli with sambar — do better here, but only if they're actually eaten.
Fermented foods at breakfast change the gut environment for the whole day. This is the principle that Japanese breakfast embodies and that Indian cuisine actually also supports — but usually later in the day. Idli, dosa, and fermented rice batters are some of the most gut-friendly foods available, and yet they tend to appear at lunch or dinner rather than breakfast. Moving even one fermented food to the morning could change the gut environment during the hours when iron absorption (and other nutrient absorption) is most active.
Variety early in the day adds up. The Turkish breakfast's strength is how many different foods it includes. Each one contributes something: a vitamin here, a healthy fat there, fibre from the vegetables, calcium from the dairy. For women trying to meet high iron and micronutrient requirements, getting some of that variety in before the day gets chaotic makes it significantly more likely to happen at all.
Skipping breakfast doesn't just affect the morning. A study comparing nine women who skipped breakfast versus ate it found that insulin and glucose levels after lunch were significantly higher on the day they skipped breakfast, demonstrating acute insulin resistance as a direct consequence of the morning omission. What you don't eat in the morning ripples forward into how your body processes what you eat at noon.
What This Means in Practice
Nobody is suggesting that Indian women need to start making miso soup before 8am or set up a Turkish breakfast spread on a weekday. That's not the point, and it's not realistic.
The point is smaller and more actionable than that.
The gap between a chai-and-biscuits breakfast and a breakfast that actually serves you is not as large as it might seem. A bowl of poha with peanuts and a squeeze of lemon. A dosa with sambar. Leftover dal and rice with some tomato. Eggs if that's accessible to you. A small banana alongside your chai instead of biscuits. Many of these are already familiar vegetarian iron rich recipes — the shift is less about new food and more about timing it earlier in the day.
These aren't dramatic interventions. They're just applying the logic that other breakfast cultures have built in automatically: get protein in early, pair vitamin C with iron-containing foods, eat something fermented when you can, and don't let the morning pass on nothing but tannins and refined flour. Leaning on hemoglobin increasing foods at breakfast, rather than saving them for dinner, is one of the simplest ways to close that gap.
Your mornings might be chaotic. Most women's are. But breakfast is one of those places where the nutritional gap between "I didn't have time" and "I ate something real" can be quietly significant — especially when iron status is already a challenge.
That's the simpler question worth sitting with: not what the research says about breakfast, but what you're actually giving yourself at the start of the day.
