Why Some Women Rarely Get Sick — While Others Catch Everything
You probably know someone like this. She's around sick people constantly — her kids bring home everything from school, she travels for work, she barely sleeps — and somehow she's fine. Meanwhile, someone else catches every cold that comes within three feet of her, takes twice as long to recover, and feels like she spent most of winter unwell.
It's easy to chalk this up to luck, or genetics, or just having "a good immune system." But that framing misses something important. Immune resilience is the ability to encounter the same bugs as everyone else and not succumb to them, or recover faster when you do it. It's shaped, day by day, by a handful of factors that most women never think of as immune-related at all.
Sleep. Stress. What you eat. How well your gut is doing. Whether certain key nutrients are where they need to be.
The woman who rarely gets sick is usually not lucky. She's usually doing more of these things right, more consistently.
Here's how it actually works.
Sleep Is Where Your Immune System Does Its Maintenance
Think of your immune system like a security team. During the day, it's patrolling, responding to threats, putting out fires. During deep sleep, it gets to do the longer, more strategic work: producing cytokines (the chemical signals that coordinate immune responses), consolidating immune memory, and deploying the cells that clear out pathogens and damaged tissue.
When sleep is cut short, that maintenance doesn't get completed.
Research shows that even restricting sleep to four hours for a single night reduced natural killer cell activity to an average of 72% compared to participants who had a full night's sleep. Natural killer cells play a key role in killing both infected cells and tumour cells. That's after one bad night. Sleep deprivation has been associated with alterations of innate and adaptive immune parameters, leading to a chronic inflammatory state and an increased risk for infectious and inflammatory pathologies.
The immune consequence of chronically poor sleep isn't dramatic or sudden — it's a gradual wearing down of the body's defences. The woman who seems to catch everything might simply be operating on consistently inadequate sleep, and her immune system is reflecting that reality.
What makes this harder for women specifically is that women have a higher predisposition for insomnia than men, and the mental load that keeps many women awake — replaying the day, planning tomorrow, processing everyone else's needs — is rarely discussed as an immune health issue. But it is one.
Chronic Stress: The Slow Immune Drain
This is the one most women know about and very few are actually managing.
A small, acute amount of stress is fine. The problem is chronic stress: the low-grade, constant, never-quite-resolved kind that most women with busy lives and high responsibility carry around. That kind of stress doesn't prime the immune system. Over time, it quietly dismantles it.
The increased level of cortisol (the main stress hormone) has been shown to inhibit immune function by inhibiting the production of cytokines and impairing T-cell activity, thereby increasing susceptibility to infections. Persistently high cortisol levels can lower the production of the white blood cells critical to immune defence, making it harder for the body to detect and fight off pathogens and slowing the healing process.
There's a particularly revealing piece of research on this: a study on individuals with chronic illness found that those experiencing ongoing stress had significantly lower T-cell counts and antibody responses to influenza. This is why women who are going through stressful periods — job pressure, caregiving, relationship strain, financial worry — tend to get sick more easily, and why the cold they catch at the end of a gruelling quarter takes longer to shift than it would have otherwise.
Stress and sleep are also deeply entangled. Stress often interferes with sleep, either by making it harder to fall asleep or causing restless sleep — which then further weakens the immune system, leaving the body more vulnerable to infections. It's a loop, and once you're in it, both problems reinforce each other.
The Gut Connection Nobody Talks About Enough
Here's a fact that surprises most people when they first hear it: 70–80% of immune cells are present in the gut, in an intricate interplay between the intestinal microbiota, the intestinal epithelial layer, and the local mucosal immune system.
This means that what's happening in your gut on any given day has a direct effect on how well your immune system is functioning. Not a loose correlation — a direct, mechanistic relationship.
The gut bacteria essentially train immune cells to recognise what's a threat and what isn't. A diverse, well-fed microbiome produces immune cells that are calibrated well. A depleted one — from antibiotics, a poor diet, chronic stress, or inconsistent eating — produces immune responses that are either too sluggish or too reactive.
What depletes gut diversity? Diets high in processed food and low in fibre. Chronic stress (again). Antibiotic courses without probiotic replenishment. Irregular eating that disrupts the microbiome's diurnal rhythm. Alcohol. All of the things that cluster together in women who are chronically overscheduled and under-nourished.
What builds it? Fibre from vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Fermented foods that introduce live cultures. Consistent eating habits that allow the microbiome to maintain a regular rhythm. And managing the stress that, left unaddressed, reshapes the gut environment in ways that affect immune function for weeks.
The Nutrient Foundation Nobody Is Checking
Here's where it gets specific, and where a lot of women are unknowingly at a disadvantage.
Immune function is not just about rest and stress management. It depends on specific nutrients being present in adequate amounts. And the most commonly deficient ones in women are iron and vitamin D — and they happen to be exactly the ones the immune system relies on most.
Iron makes immune cells. Prolonged iron deficiency is associated with a shift toward a weaker immune signature, with impaired maturation of macrophages and dendritic cells — the cells responsible for identifying and clearing pathogens. A study of older homebound women found that iron deficiency was associated with impairments in both cell-mediated and innate immunity, rendering them more vulnerable to infections. Iron is needed for the bone marrow to produce adequate immune cells. When iron is low, the immune system is working with a smaller army than it should be — one more reason getting run down, catching every bug going around, and other iron deficiency symptoms so often show up together.
Vitamin D regulates the whole immune response. Due to its antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and immunomodulatory properties, vitamin D is crucial for both innate and adaptive immunity. Deficiencies impair immune responses and increase susceptibility to viral infections and severe disease. And as we've covered in earlier pieces, vitamin D deficiency is nearly universal among Indian women — with prevalence rates of 80–90% across the population. This means most women reading this are running an immune system that is missing one of its key regulators.
What's particularly relevant for women in India is that iron and vitamin D deficiencies often occur together. Deficiencies in iron and vitamin D can each have severe consequences including increased susceptibility to infections, and adolescent girls and women of reproductive age are particularly susceptible due to high requirements — women iron needs simply run higher than most diets are built to cover. The dietary patterns that leave iron low tend also leave zinc low for the same reasons — high phytate content in cereal-based diets, limited animal protein, and cooking methods that reduce mineral bioavailability.
The woman who keeps getting sick might not need to sleep more or stress less (though both help). She might need a ferritin check, a vitamin D test, and to actually eat lunch — and, if the numbers come back low, a closer look at iron rich foods and a proper iron supplement for women rather than another round of antibiotics.
What the Woman Who Rarely Gets Sick Is Actually Doing
She's probably not doing anything dramatic. She's not taking twelve supplements or following a strict protocol. She's more likely:
Sleeping adequately and consistently, enough that her immune system is completing its maintenance cycles most nights.
Managing her stress in some way that prevents it from becoming chronic, whether that's boundaries, exercise, time outside, or simply not being in a permanently reactive state.
Eating in a way that keeps her gut microbiome reasonably diverse — not a pristine diet, but one that includes enough vegetables, fermented foods, and protein that her gut isn't working against her.
Having enough iron, vitamin D, and zinc to run a functional immune response — which often means having had these checked at some point and addressed them, whether through iron rich foods, sunlight, or a well-chosen supplement, if they were low.
None of this is extraordinary. But all of it is consistent. And consistency, it turns out, is what immune resilience actually looks like. It's not about never being exposed to illness. It's about having a system that's resourced enough to handle what it encounters — and recover when it doesn't.
